from CARNATIONS

8/22/2019

                    by Alexis Pope

1
when seen from the window
color emits
radiant shrub
no window can hold
the depth
a home can provide
stable flooring
lights to flip
when entered

2
at recess the game
is played without
supervision the words
yelled through
tiny mouths
not understanding
yet the definitions
meaning holds
in the body

3
debt snowball
sounds like more
fun than work
but the work
gets done
of course it does
the work holds
the wrists undoing any
attempt at shape

4
in the woods
she stood with arms
held out
posed as orion
a piece of golden
fruit in pocket
something shared
which disappears
within the home

4
some call it
thoughtless flower
wrinkled rose
the stem
sturdy beneath the head
depends on
who does the holding
on whether
it wants to be held

5
who is it owed
the explanation
of days to numbers
timeline bouquets
out beyond the deck
something emailed
returned back
as invalid
address
